The idea of designing a random MIDI note generator originated from a workflow that I wanted to simplify for myself. I love generating musical elements that arise randomly from already existing or newly generated loops. That's why I wanted to create a module that generates random MIDI notes, but allows you to set the parameters for them.

How I prefer to use Mira

Mira always needs a MIDI signal generated either by an external or the internal Ableton sequencer to create random notes.

I try to create a melody in advance that fits the track and can be well integrated. Usually, it's a simple melody played on the Ableton Sequencer.

With an instrument

Mira helps me then to bring more variety to the sequence of notes in a simple way. The whole thing is then converted to the correct scale using Ableton Scale, creating a constantly changing sequence of melodies.

With the Simpler

Another method that I really like to use does not use an instrument but an Ableton Simpler with a sliced Loop.

Using this method, interesting new sequences can be obtained from existing loops in a very short time. By using the Note+ and Note- controls, I can precisely determine the range in which the played sounds are located within the Loop.

Through these two methods, I often manage to generate inspiring loops in the shortest possible time, which I otherwise only achieve with tedious experimentation.

I hope this blogpost gave you a small insight into my working method and maybe show you a new inspiring way that you can easily try out in Ableton yourself.
